The latest WHO Expert Assessment Report on THE Treatment of COVID-19 with Traditional Chinese Medicine, released under relevant columns on the WHO website, has clearly affirmed the safety and effectiveness of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine in treating COVID-19. In response, an official of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine said that the report fully affirmed the contribution of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine in fighting COVID-19, which reflected the great importance that WHO attaches to traditional Chinese medicine and other traditional medicine. It also showed that TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine will continue to play a great role in fighting the epidemic of the century in the future.
Over the past two years and more, TCM has shown its unique advantages in fully participating in epidemic prevention and treatment, and has played its role in the recent response to the omicron mutant COVID-19 outbreak. In this regard, the report fully affirms that TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine is effective in the treatment of COVID-19, and has been shown to be particularly effective for mild and common cases according to clinical efficacy indicators, which can help reduce the risk of mild or common cases turning into severe cases. For mild and common cases, compared with conventional treatment alone, TCM as an additional intervention can shorten the time of virus clearance, clinical symptom relief and hospital stay; Early use of TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine can improve clinical outcomes for patients with mild and common forms of COVID-19.
How safe is TCM treatment? The report clearly indicates that the intervention with traditional Chinese medicine is not only well tolerated, but also as safe as conventional treatment alone.
An official of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine said that the report provides an objective and fair evaluation of China's COVID-19 prevention, control and treatment practices and "China's plan", which will also promote better and deeper participation of traditional medicine including TCM in global COVID-19 prevention and control and safeguard the health of people around the world.
From emergency response to regular epidemic prevention and control, China has constantly revised and improved TCM diagnosis and treatment protocols. The newly released COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol (Trial Version 9) shows that the three-drug three-party formula is still effective in treating asymptomatic and confirmed COVID-19 patients with omicron variant strain.
