The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that some 8,800 7-Eleven convenience stores in the metropolitan area have changed their work schedule to make fried food from 15 p.m. to 18 p.m., when power supply is relatively tight. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun analyzed that the power supply shortage usually occurs in summer based on past experience. The problem is particularly acute this year because of the march earthquake off the coast of Fukushima, which damaged some coal-fired power plants and reduced supply capacity. After the great east Japan earthquake, the number of nuclear power plants that can operate has been greatly reduced. This, combined with a heatwave that exceeded expectations, has resulted in a severe power shortage.
